Renowned British photographer Brian Griffin selects Kym's Grace series and Colour Combined video installation to exhibit alongside Himmelstrasse at London show.
The exhibition was held at the Magic Gallery in London and sponsored by the Royal Photographic Society, organised by Vice-President Dr. Del Barrett and helped along the way by Jonathan Taylor and a team of volunteers. This show is one in a series organised by the RPS which give students the opportunity to show their work alongside that of the Fellows of the Society.
Brian Griffin's Himmelstrasse is a haunting typology of railway lines used to transport prisoners to concentration camps in Poland during World War II. Kym's Grace series records the permanent skeletons of dehydrated, withered soap bubbles to represent memories of the past through a series of life stages: Conception, Infancy, Childhood, Teenage, Young Adult, Family, Retirement, Old Age and Death.
The Colour Confined video shows the cycle of light interference colours of bubbles encased in a cylindrical glass tube. The colours are vibrant at first but fade over time to leave the bubbles completely colourless until the moment they burst.
Grace is the final body of work from Kym's BA (Hons) Photography course. The Arts University Bournemouth awarded her with a First Class Honours degree in 2014.
Colour Confined was recorded during her two year ArtScience collaboration with Prof. Stefan Hutzler, Leader of the Foams and Complex Systems Group, School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin.
Brian Griffin was considered "the photographer of the decade" by the Guardian newspaper in 1989, "the most unpredicatble and influential British portrait photographer of the last decade by the British Journal of Photography in 2005 and "one of Britain's most influential photographers" by the World Photography Organisation in 2015. Griffin has photographed some of the most iconic album covers ever produced and worked with many clients in the music industry; Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, Midge Ure, Dire Straits, Simple Minds and Sting and photographed some of the most iconic album covers ever.
Kym was ecstatic her work was selected for the show. She has admired Griffin's work for a number of years and is a collector of his self-published books.
